Werft Shipbuilding delivers Z-575: a showcase of efficiency, reliability, and versatility at sea

URK, April 2025

Werft Shipbuilding proudly announces the successful delivery of the Z-575, a modern fishing vessel that immediately stands out for its performance, comfort, and fuel efficiency. Following a waiting period for official documentation from the Belgian authorities, the Z-575 has now officially entered service — with excellent results.

This delivery not only concludes an administrative delay, but more importantly marks the beginning of a promising new chapter for the owner and crew. The Z-575 was built to excel in multiple areas: reliability, sustainability, and multifunctionality.

A versatile workhorse for modern fishing

The Z-575 was developed with the specific needs of today’s fisherman in mind. The vessel is designed for maximum flexibility in fishing techniques and seasonal catch requirements. Thanks to its smart layout, spacious working deck, and tailored technical features, the Z-575 can be easily adapted to various fishing methods without compromising on safety or efficiency.

This gives fishermen a practical advantage in responding to changing catch opportunities and regulations. As such, the vessel distinguishes itself not only in sustainability and efficiency but also in its multifunctional deployment.

Stable and reliable at sea

From its first sea trials to its current deployment, the Z-575 has proven to operate reliably and efficiently, without any significant technical issues.

Due to the vessel’s relatively compact length in combination with its installed power, the stability requirements were particularly demanding. The result is excellent stability and a highly comfortable motion at sea, confirmed by the crew.

One of the most remarkable features of the Z-575 is its exceptionally low fuel consumption. In an era where fuel expenses heavily impact the operational costs of fishing vessels, this ship offers a clear economic advantage. The combination of an optimized hull design, modern propulsion technology, and innovative electrical systems makes this possible.

“The Z-575 is performing beyond expectations. We immediately found our rhythm! Fuel consumption is exceptionally low, especially compared to similar trawlers,” says owner Jelle Hakvoort. “It’s a clear step forward — both in terms of cost savings and environmental impact.”

Looking ahead

The Z-575 demonstrates how modern shipbuilding can actively contribute to a future-proof fishing industry. It combines operational reliability with sustainable technology and versatile usability. Werft Shipbuilding remains committed to delivering innovative, high-quality solutions to the maritime sector. The delivery of the Z-575 marks an important milestone in that ongoing mission.

New order for Werft Shipbuilding from Rederij Doeksen

URK, July 2024

LNG ferries in Harlingen undergo refurbishment.

Werft Shipbuilding has recently received a new order for the modification of two LNG catamarans from Rederij Doeksen in Harlingen. These vessels, the Willem de Vlamingh and the Willem Barentsz, were built in Vietnam, delivered in 2020, and currently operate on the ferry service between Harlingen and the Wadden Islands Terschelling and Vlieland.

Enhancing operability, reducing emissions

To improve maneuverability and further alleviate environmental impact, it has been decided to undergo a major update of the current onboard installation. This will ultimately result in fuel savings, emission reductions, and enhanced maneuverability, thereby improving the vessels’ operability.

The decision was made to modify the current configuration by installing permanent magnet motors behind the main engines, replacing the current battery packs with higher-capacity ones, and installing an additional bow thruster on both sides of the ship. The entire system will be connected to two newly supplied Direct Current (DC) panels linked to the existing main switchboards.

The batteries will be charged during the crossings to Harlingen or Terschelling/Vlieland, enabling emission-free loading/unloading in the ports. The addition of an extra bow thruster will significantly enhance the vessels’ maneuverability, particularly in adverse weather conditions.

Brand new DC Power Management System

For this installation, a completely new DC Power Management System has been designed by the collaboration of Piet Brouwer Elektrotechniek and Marble Automation. VCU/TCD will provide the aluminum work, VETH Propulsion the bow thrusters, MG Energy Systems the batteries, HR Piping the piping and fittings, and Marimecs will handle part of the engineering and drafting work.

The management of Werft Shipbuilding is delighted with this new assignment. The engineering and preparation, including the creation of an extensive test setup for the new system, will be conducted in Urk.

Schedule

Early next year, the Willem de Vlamingh will be the first to come ashore in Harlingen to complete the further installation and commissioning. If all goes according to plan, the Willem Barentsz will follow in early 2026.

Werft wins new build project for multifunctional fishing vessel

URK, July 2023

On Saturday 15 July 2023, Pieter Pruiksma, general manager of Werft Shipbuilding, and Jelle Hakvoort, representing shipping company De Toekomst, signed a contract for the construction of a new Werft 2808 multifunctional fishing vessel.

The Flemish trawler will be named Janneke after the daughter of the captain/owner Jelle Hakvoort and be 27.99 metres long with a beam of 8.25 metres. Hakvoort himself is delighted with the design. “It is ideal for beam rawling in the winter months, and twin rigging in the summer; either for plaice or crustaceans.” Hakvoort has spent his career to date fishing on Eurocutters, known as the smaller segment in Belgium, and is now switching to a larger segment: “I have complete faith in Werft and its experienced partners,” he adds.

Proud milestone
Pieter Pruiksma calls this first fishery project a dream come true for his yard. It is also a very special event for Yanmar Europe, which will be supplying its first main engine to a Dutch client in the fishing sector. “We are proud of the fact that this will be the first large trawler to be entirely built on Urk for 24 years,” says Pruiksma. “This project strengthens the maritime cluster and highlights the cooperation within the region.” The hull will be completely built in the covered hall of De Flux and should be ready for transport to the port the end of the year.

Although Marimecs is responsible for the engineering onboard, the rest of Janneke will be built entirely by local companies in Urk. Hull construction is being realised by VCU-TCD, the electrical system will be supplied by Piet Brouwer Electrotechnology, carpentry is in the hands of De Flux, nautical equipment is provided by De Boer Marine, blasting and painting will be realised by Straalbedrijf Flevoland, and the sanitary facilities and cooling delivered by ITech. VCU and RI&S will ensure premium levels of onboard safety and the trawler is expected to be ready for use by the summer of next year.

Learning curve
Hakvoort did a great deal of research before making the choice for Yanmar. “The reasons are simple: low rpm, large volume in litres, economic diesel consumption, and a mechanical engine on which we can perform a large part of the maintenance ourselves – with few electronics that can breakdown easily. Moreover, there is a large parts depot in Almere, just 45 minutes from Urk by car. In addition, I noticed that many Norwegian and Scottish fishermen are choosing for Yanmar and that says a lot.”

Janneke will be equipped with a Yanmar 6N21AW 736 kW 800rpm main engine with a ZF connection (type ZF W10220). Her capacity will be half of that found on a traditional large Dutch beam trawler, Pruiksma explains. “Nonetheless, she will be able to store 10-metre rigs and have two net rolls of ten cubic metres. In addition, there is a stern gate for optimal user comfort when fishing aft. The boat will also boast a 3.4 metre propeller, a traction of 21 tonnes, and a speed of 10 knots. The multifunctional vessel will be built in such a way that she uses as little fuel as possible while fishing. Due to the low rpm of the main engine, we have an optimal output of 97 rpm on the propeller.”

Werft Shipbuilding is committed to sustainable shipping!

URK, MARCH 12, 2021

Starting in december 2020, Werft Shipbuilding, maritime entrpreneurs from Urk and Horizon Flevoland and their subsidy consultancy Haute Equipe have worked together to submit an official subsidy application to the REACT EU counter at the beginning of February. We are proud that we have achieved this performance together. The REACT EU expert committee will consider our application and decide whether it will be accepted.

Opportunities for West II
“REACT EU is intended for the furhter development of concepts that have the potential to de be promising, but are at risk of being delayed by the crisis. With the REACT EU rogram, the European Union is stimulation a green, digital and resilient recovery of the regional economy. The Western Netherlands have the potential to make a significant contribution for this. The budget for REACT EU is spent through the current ERDF programs, such as Opportunities for West II” (Source: Opportunities for West II )

Smart & Sustainable Shipping Flevoland (SSSF)

“The maritime cluster in Flevoland is part of the Netherlands Maritime sector ad is one of the best in the Netherlands and Europs”(Source: Regio Deal Noord Flevoland). To Turn Flevoland into a hotspot of maritime sustainability, more targeted investments in knwoledge and innovation are needed. Companies from the maritime cluster in Flevoland, in collaboration with Horizon Flevoland and maritime institue MARIN, have therefore developed this proposal for Smart & Sustainable Shipping Flevoland (SSSF), which is making use of funding from the European corona repair program REACT EU.

The main objective pof the SSSF project is the development of the maritime cluster in Flevoland into an intnernational hotspot for sustainable shiping, in which companies alone the entire maritime chain (designers – builders – users) work together with educational and knowledge institutions on the development and applications of the latest sustainable an digital innovations

Sustainable Shipping
Making the maritime sector more sustainable mainly meansinvesting in cleaner and more efficients ships. In addition, digitalisation can also achieve even more efficiency by means of automating sailing at sea and in inland waterrs and making use of smart technology. In addition to contributing to more sustainable shipping, this also improves the competitive position of the Dutch shipping industry and makes shipping safer.

The basis of the SSSF project is formed bu the ambition of the new shipyard WERFT to bring back the complete building (from hull to completion) back to the town of Urk. According to WERFT, the future of fishing lies in building smart ships in combination with sustainable fishing techniques. There is great enthusiasm among fishing companies in Urk to replace the outdated fleet with these new innovative and energy-efficient vessels. In addition, new smart shipping applications are being developed and applied for the maritime industry of shipping and fishing. To this end, the partners involved are developing new both emission and smart dashboards that ensure an improved efficieny of the ship (with regard to propulsion, propeller and hull). These dashboards offer opportunities to make the operational deployment of ships more sustainable.

Werft Shipbuilding tests new design fishing vessel!

URK, MARCH 12, 2021

For their latest design fishing vessel, Werft Shipbuilding has sought cooperation with the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands. One of the tank facilities in Wageningen was used to test their enw design fishing vessel.

Maritime Research Institute Netherlands, abbreviated as MARIN, has been one of the world’s leading maritime insitutes with more than 85 years of experience in independent research within the maritime sector. By combining softare, model test facilities, simulators, and full scale monitoring capabilities, they contribute to cleaner, safer and smarter ships and operations.

Ship as daily tool
For a fisherman a fishing vessel is their daily tool and it is therefore important to deliver a vessel that not only has optimal performance but also a ship that is functioning properly. Thehull design for a fishing vessel is a complex piece of engineering. To safeguard expectations, it was decided to test the design in MARIN’s Deep Water Basin.

Optimistic
During the bath trials it was tested what he resistance of the hull design was and the ships maximum achievable speed and bollard pull will be during the various sailing and fishing conditions. Based on the results, possible optimization van be applied in furhter design stages, resulting in an even more sustainable design. The preliminary results appear favorable and confirm expectations based on previous CFD assesments.

Werft Shipbuilding enters the market with a unique local concept!

URK, MARCH 12, 2021

Werft Shipbuilding is new to the market yet brings decades of relevant experience to the sector. The Urk (NL) shipyard consolidates many years of experience of a select group of ship construction partners, each with their own specialism in shipbuilding, technology and fishery. This unique blend of highly-specialised experts results in ships that will quickly win the hearts of countless fishermen.

The ‘Werft’ name has been floating around maritime circles for some time now. Werft Shipbuilding managing director Pieter Pruiksma says it’s high time to reveal a bit more about this company and its ambitious plans. He explains enthusiastically: “Our objective is clear: we want to bring shipbuilding back to the village of Urk, historically one of the main centres of Dutch shipbuilding and fishery. We want to harness the strength and expertise of local partners and let our clients benefit from local construction. Our promise? A perfect balance between cost and quality, very tight planning, and a guaranteed delivery date.”

Built at Urk from bow to stern
From concept to design, from selection to procurement and from construction to delivery – Werft will assume all roles and tasks and provide full service. Each ship is designed to meet the client’s most detailed and challenging wishes and requirements. Pieter Pruiksma: “From hull construction to final finishing, from carpenters to electricians: Werft can handle all development facets in-house. This is a unique concept in shipbuilding. And the advantages for the client are huge: they are assured of tight planning and throughput times, and no one has to face any unpleasant surprises: a deal is a deal, and we deliver what we promise.”

Perfect cost-quality ratio
Many of Werft’s construction partners are part of the Urk Maritime cooperation collective, such as VCU-TCD, Piet Brouwer Elektrotechniek, De Flux and De Boer Marine. Other well-known names such as Padmos, C-iob and Marin are also part of the collective. Pieter Pruiksma: “We use the facilities of these partners as much as possible, and project finishing is also executed in the Urk harbour. Combined with our flat organisational structure, this means we have minimal overhead. That is how we offer our customers the best cost-quality ratio.”

Pieter Pruiksma - General Manager Werft Shipbuilding

The service you need, when you need it
Werft offers its clients another crucial added value: quick service. Pieter Pruiksma: “All our partners have extremely high standards of service, and each can provide fast on-site support across the North Sea ports. From Harlingen to the Eemshaven, from Boulogne-sur-Mer to Thyboron: our clients can count on a fast provision of services, materials and parts anywhere they need them. Werft and its partners are very familiar with the fishing industry and the way it rolls. So we know first-hand just how crucial it is to get things done quickly.

A promising start
So far, Werft Shipbuilding has made a very promising start. “The first engineering contract has been signed and multiple construction projects have commenced. We have also seen a lot of national and international interest. We can’t wait to show the world the full potential of Werft!”
