LNG – Catamaran | 70 metres
The two LNG catamarans operated by Rederij Doeksen, Willem de Vlamingh and Willem Barentsz, are undergoing a major technical refit in Harlingen. Werft Shipbuilding is leading the project with the aim of increasing the vessels’ operational availability, improving manoeuvrability, and further reducing emissions.
By combining new battery packs, permanent magnet motors, and additional bow thrusters, the vessels are being future-proofed for sustainable and reliable transport to and from the Wadden Islands. A brand-new DC Power Management System will ensure intelligent and efficient energy control. Thanks to this upgrade, the ferries will soon be able to load and unload fully emission-free in port — a significant step forward in the greening of Wadden Sea shipping.

REFIT
The LNG catamarans Willem de Vlamingh and Willem Barentsz are undergoing a technical upgrade aimed at improved manoeuvrability, lower emissions, and increased operational availability.
Permanent magnet motors are being installed behind the main engines to support propulsion. The existing battery packs are being replaced with higher-capacity units from MG Energy Systems, which are charged during transit and enable fully emission-free loading and unloading in port.
An additional bow thruster is being added to each side of the vessel, supplied by VETH Propulsion, to enhance manoeuvrability, particularly in adverse weather conditions.
The electrical system is being expanded with two new DC panels connected to the main switchboards. Overall power control is managed by a newly developed DC Power Management System, designed by Piet Brouwer Elektrotechniek and Marble Automation.
Aluminium construction is provided by VCU/TCD, piping by HR Piping, and part of the engineering is handled by Marimecs. Preparatory work and system assembly are taking place in Urk.
